Treasure in Heaven

Where is your treasure? Do you first take a look at your bank account? Do you look up the value of your house? Do you combine them? Is your treasure your job? Do you think of your family as your treasure? Is your treasure in pictures? What if your treasure is all wrong?

We put a lot of stock in money, possessions, and our jobs. Money is the easiest one to poke at. Possessions are easy, too, but may be a little harder to poke at. Jobs can be real challenging. They not only allow us to make money but may also bring us prestige and notoriety.

Family is especially difficult to poke at. Sometimes, our family is all we have. We love our children and grandchildren. We love our parents and grandparents. We enjoy time spent with them. They help us when we need it. We help them when they need it. We have a lot of time and energy invested in our families.

Jesus tells us our heart will be where our treasure is. If our jobs are our treasure, we sacrifice our family to get one more thing done. If our money is our treasure, we are stingy and seek out more ways to make more money. If our possessions are our treasure, we hoard them, we won’t lend them out, we continue to seek to buy more possessions and more expensive ones.

Jesus reminds us that all of this will fade away. He tells us to store up treasure in heaven. How do we do that? We love one another. We love our enemy. We care for one another. We share with one another. We give to those in need. Most of all, we love God with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37). It is our actions in love that pleases God and builds our treasure in heaven.

I pray we all choose to build our treasure in heaven. I pray we love God with all our heart, soul, and mind. I pray we love one another and show our love with actions that comes from our love for God. Build your treasure in heaven. Love God with all you are. Show your love with actions.

Matthew 6:19-21 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal, but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust consumes and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
