Where do you go for guidance? Do you seek someone you consider to be wise? Do you seek out your friends? Do you look to a mentor? How do you make decisions within your household? How do you make decisions in the workplace? How do you make decisions in the church?
Seeking guidance is an important task for all of us. Who we seek guidance from is as an important as seeking guidance. How we make decisions is also important. Making decisions rashly often ends badly. Our decisions should be well thought out and with guidance.
Joshua got all the leaders of Israel together and brought them into God’s presence. They spent time seeking God’s wisdom prior to making a decision. They were facing a monumental decision. They were about to face a significant change. Joshua was going to die soon and he wanted the leaders to know what it meant to come into God’s presence, seeking his guidance. Joshua knew they would need to continue to rely on God as they expanded their inhabitance in the promised land.
As we seek to make significant decisions, we, too, should come into the presence of God. We do this in prayer. We can spend that time in prayer in a church sanctuary, a quiet place at home, or a quiet place in nature. Regardless of the location, the important thing is it allows us to focus solely on God, asking him to guide us in our decision. This is especially important for the leaders of the church. Continually seeking God’s guidance, both in committee meetings and outside of them, is the way in which wise church leaders lead the church well.
I pray we all seek to be in the presence of God. I pray we spend quiet time in prayer, especially when we are leaders. I pray each one of us will ask God to guide us in all our decisions. Enter into God’s presence. Spend time in prayer. Ask God for guidance. Seek God in all decisions.
Joshua 24:1 Then Joshua gathered all the tribes of Israel to Shechem and summoned the elders, the heads, the judges, and the officers of Israel, and they presented themselves before God.
